One of the most important alarm device attached to any home security system is the alarm siren. The alarm siren is the internal or external sounder that alerts an intruder that they have been detected and the police is on the way. It also alerts your neighbours that there is an intruder near and so they can take precautions.
An alarm system siren is usually programmed for a specific amount of time ranging from a few minutes up to 15 minutes. Although you could program the siren to sound until it is disarmed, this is not advisable. Your neighbors would not appreciate hearing your security system siren if there was a false alarm and you were out of town.
Some home security systems offer strobe lights that flash with the siren and adds extra noticablity to the security system. On most security alarm systems, these lights can be programmed to continue to flash even after the security alarm siren times out. Using this feature is helpful in alerting the homeowner that the home security system has been triggered before they enter the residence. This is be a life saving feature that you can not afford to ignore.
