What is Pepper Spray?
Pepper spray contains the active ingredient Oleoresin Capsicum that is made from the strongest, hot cayenne peppers available. Most pepper spray contains from 5% to 18% strength. All concentrations are very effective in stopping most humans and animals in their tracks with just one spray in the face.
Pepper Spray is measured with Scoville Heat Units (SHU). The SHU is the actual true hotness of a product and its ability to provide temporary non lethal debilitaing results in an attacker. The SHU will vary by manufacturer and 1 million SHU is more than enough to stop someone. Some pepper sprays contain invisible UV dyes that will color the skin under various special lights. This is to help identify the attacker after an assault.
