How to Install a Security System

Most home security systems come with its alarm installation manual, alarm operational manual, alarm owner manual, alarm user manual and alarm programming manual to guide the homeowner through the process of installing their own system.  Be sure to use the alarm manual as a reference.

Alarm Panel and Siren

One of the first steps in installing a security system is to mount the master alarm control panel and siren in a location that is secure from vandalism but can be heard in the event that the alarm system sounds.  This is usually in the attic, closet or crawl space.  Connect the power transformer and backup alarm battery directly to the alarm panel.

Key Touchpad

Install the key touchpad near the front door to give you enough response time to “ARM” and “DISARM” the alarm system upon entering and existing the home.  If you wish to have a keypad at the back door or garage, install it at this time.  If you alarm system is going to be a hardwired system, run a wire from each keypad back to the master alarm panel.  If for some reason this is not feasible, then consider installing a wireless security system as it does not require the need to run wire from each device back to the alarm panel.  Now get ready to start installing the associated alarm system devices.

Motion Detector

Determine how many area’s need motion detectors to protect maximum coverage.  In most cases, each room will need at least one with several in the common areas such as living room, dining room, hallways and bedrooms.  Once you figure out how many you need, intall each of them and run the wire back to the master alarm control panel.  You do not need to run wires if you are installing a wireless alarm system.

Door and Window Sensor

Start installing the sensors on each door and windows.  It is a good rule of thumb to use the alarm system instruction manual to determine where to position each device and run those wires to the alarm control panel.  Although it cost more to purchase, it saves alot of time in this step if you are using a wireless security system.

Glass Break Detector

The glass break detectors are usually installed in the ceiling where there is going to be glass such as windows, doors and even the garage.  Be sure to follow the alarm installation guide to determine the correct spacing and coverage requirements.  Generally, you will need less glass break detectors than you do motion detectors because the coverage is more extensive with a glass break detector.

Completing Alarm System Installation

Go ahead and finish installing any remaining devices such as temperature sensors, shock sensors, flood detectors and freeze detectors in the area described in the alarm guide.  Once you have completed installing all of the devices, it is time conduct the alarm system programming functions to operate the system.

Alarm System Programming

Using the keypad and alarm programming manual, program each device (zone) into the alarm system and test each one for operation.  Program the user codes for each user of the alarm system.  You can program a master code for everyone or assign a different alarm user code to each family member.  If you are having problems with programming your alarm system, refer to the troubleshooting and repair manuals to trace out the problem.  In no time, you will be protected with your new home security system.
